The new HyVee Food Store (background) at Devils Glen and Middle Roads opened in May and demolition crews made short work of the old grocery store to make way for additional parking. The new HyVee includes a Starbucks Coffee Shop.

Housing starts lag banner '06 construction pace



The number of housing starts through April in Bettendorf continues to lag the pace of construction last year, a particularly strong year for homebuilding. The total valuation of new construction – residential, commercial and industrial – through April totaled $18.6 million, compared to $34.6 million for the same period in 2006. A towboat pushing empty barges heads upriver along the Mississippi between Moline and Bettendorf. With spring comes renewed barge traffic on the Upper Mississippi River.

Another sign of spring – installation of docks at Leach Park, Bettendorf. With the spring runoff past and water levels on the Mississippi River falling, city employees re-install docks at the popular riverfront park and municipal boat ramp.

Nice 'office' view with short commute



On sunny days without much wind, drilling in the Mississippi River could be an ideal job. Not so much on rainy days with gusty winds. A soil sampling crew has experienced both while obtaining cores from the bottom of the Mississippi River in recent weeks. The work, just north of the Interstate 74 Bridge, is preliminary engineering work for the proposed new I-74 bridge between Bettendorf and Moline.
