On to state for Bettendorf boys and girls basketball teams

Bettendorf students swamp the boys basketball team after the Bulldogs defeated Davenport Central 53-46 to win the district championship and a ticket to the state 4A tournament next Wednesday (March 17) in Des Moines. The girls team punched its ticket to the state tournament last week and fell to top-ranked Ankeny in the first round contest March 10.

A strong March breeze

The strong winds of early March even grounded the ducks along Leach Park in Bettendorf. The wind brought rain showers, but moderate temperatures kept the precipitation from turning to snow.

In our opinion. . . upstream bridge should be the priority

The plan to rebuild and widen the Interstate 74 Bridge is not cost-effective, will add to air and noise pollution and ultimately will fail to improve bi-state travel in the Quad Citiesí region.

A new six-lane bridge will significantly increase air pollution and noise pollution and the decade of construction work will make the I-74 corridor a traffic nightmare during, and even after, construction work is completed.

Regional planners and local governments should be working instead on an upstream crossing between Bettendorf and East Moline that will be needed to carry an estimated 22,000 daily crossings of the Mississippi River in 2025.

Scott County Family Y registration begins for spring seasons

Bulldogs maul Fort Madison in non-conference match-up

Bettendorf center Mike Vandello shoots a freethrow during the Bulldogs' win over Fort Madison Feb. 14. Fort Madison lost its leading scorer a minute into the contest and the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half to win by more than 20 points. A loss at Clinton Tuesday, Feb. 17 and North Scott's win over Pleasant Valley left North Scott alone in first place in the MAC. Bettendorf and Pleasant Valley are tied for second with a week left in the regular season.
