MINUTES
BETTENDORF PARK BOARD
SPECIAL MEETING
AUGUST 8, 2001

The Bettendorf Park Board held a special meeting on August 8, 2001, in the Banquet Room at the Herbert D. Goettsch Community Center at 4:00 pm.

Present: Hutter, Adamson, Glenn, Kamp, Makoben

Absent: None

Chairman Joe Hutter announced that the purpose of the meeting was to get information from the Director of Parks and Recreation, Steve Grimes, regarding the update on Splash Landing Family Aquatics and to review the current recommendations.

Steve Grimes stated that they had been working for a number of weeks to resolve the clarity issues in the main pool at Splash Landing but were unable to do so. At this point, we do not feel that the problems will be solved before the end of the season, so the recommendation is for closure of the main pool for the remainder of the season.

The zero depth pool will remain open until the originally set closing date of August 22, 2001. We will continue to work with the contractors, if the Board decides to close the pool, to try to find the exact cause of the clarity problem and come back with a recommendation on how to resolve it.

Chairman Hutter asked if the Board had any other questions.

Commissioner Adamson stated that the problems should be rectified this year so we can open next season without any trouble.

Commissioner Kamp asked what was our next step? Are we checking the clarity tomorrow and, if it is cloudy again, are we draining and repainting?

Steve stated that we were running another clarity check tomorrow. We are currently waiting for recommendations as far as draining and repainting.

Commissioner Kamp asked if we have spoken with other paint companies?

Steve stated that we have not spoken with any other paint companies but that Burbach Aquatics will be giving us a list of paint companies that they recommend.

Chairman Hutter expressed his disappointment that we tried all summer long to keep the pool open, but we continued to have the same problems as last year, especially during the hottest summer months. The children are really the ones that donít understand. We tried to open this up and make it one of the finer water facilities in the area. We need to focus on the problems that need to be fixed, and if there are any other projects we need to take on, to do it now, so it wonít happen again next year.

On motion by Makoben, seconded by Adamson, to close the main pool at Splash Landing for the remainder of the season and to leave the zero depth pool open until August 22, 2001.

Commissioner Kamp asked what if the clarity problem becomes solved before the end of the season, will there be a chance of reopening yet this year?

Chairman Hutter stated that was not very likely to happen with the timeline that we have to fix it before the end of the season.
