An angel atop the Abby Hotel in Bettendorf overlooks the community. The former monastery has a commanding view of the Mississippi River and its chapel has become a popular wedding location in recent years.

BHS Goldusters perform

The Bettendorf High School Goldusters perform during a recent boys basketball game. The high school dance group won statewide honors in recent competition and are regular performers during half time at the school athletic games.

Golfing through winter


The unseasonably warm weather this December provides golfers, not sledders, with the opportunity to get in a few more rounds on the city's Palmer Hills Golf Course. Only a trace of snow has been received locally so far this December.

Bettendorf defeats Assumption in MAC action

Both the Bettendorf boys and girls teams defeated their Assumption opponents in MAC action Friday, Dec. 7. The boys varsity record is 1-1 after an opening season loss to Cedar Rapids Washington. The girls basketball team is undefeated in MAC play. Above, Coach Kevin Skillett goes over strategy during a time-out. The Bulldogs rallied from an early deficit to the Knights and then held off a late surge by Assumption to net the first MAC victory.

Ducks in the fog

Ducks don't seem to mind the fog as they paddle along the Mississippi River near Leach Park. The ducks, like local residents, are enjoying the mild December weather.

Festival of Trees Parade



The city of Bettendorf's hot air balloon, the Tin Man from "The Wizard of Oz," drifts above Davenport's River Drive during the Quad City Arts Festival of Trees Parade. In the background is the Bettendorf High School Marching Band.

Duck Creek Recreation Trail reaches Riverdale

The Duck Creek Recreation Trail has taken a small but important step with the extension under State Street into Riverdale. The trail ends just past the State Street bridge over Duck Creek in a small park area. Future plans call for connecting the Duck Creek trail to the proposed trail along the Mississippi River.
