Grain terminal move to Bettendorf riverfront advances

Relocation of River Gulf Grain from Davenport to Bettendorf's riverfront has moved a step closer with approval of the project's site development plan Feb. 17 by the city's planning and zoning commission.

Paving the way for the site plan approval was River Gulf's agreement to share the cost of extending Depot Street west to serve the new grain terminal, thus shifting truck traffic to 31st Street, rather than using the 23rd Street to access to the site.

The city's new special events center is located just west of 21st Street and the city recently renovated State and 21st Street with decorative concrete and new LED street lights. One of the objections to the continued use of the Davenport riverfront by River Gulf has been the traffic congestion created by grain trucks, along with dust from the grain drying operation.

Commissioners were told the Depot Street extension expense would be shared between River Gulf and the city and that agreement would be provided to aldermen when the site plan goes before the city council. No costs were given for the new street construction.
